Lismore City Council’s Wilsons River Redevelopment Project provides visitors and residents with an opportunity to share in the cultural, recreational and historical aspects of our City. The Wilsons River Experience Walk is an important aspect of this project, featuring interpretive Story Sites illustrating the diverse nature and history of this region. Lismore City Council and Southern Cross University’s Office of Regional Engagement have co-ordinated the consultation, research, design and construction of the first three Story Sites in Riverside Park via a professional team comprising Leonie Lane (Graphic Design), Dr Johanna Kijas (Historical Research and Text), Roy Charles Gordon (Widjabal History and Language), Sheldon Harrington with John Stewart (Welcome Pavers) and Anne Hart (Project Manager).

The Richmond River Historical Society has provided much information and photographic material used in this project.

Lismore is country to the Widjabal people of the Bundjalung nation. It is a living culture with continuous connection to place, many families maintaining their Wyabul language and custom. We thank the Elders and others who have contributed to the knowledge of this project.

Story Sites
The Story Sites have become outdoor classrooms or meeting places where people of all ages and cultures can come and learn local history, Bundjalung words and phrases, cautionary tales with messages and about important sites in our region. They acknowledge the various histories and occupations of Lismore’s diverse community and contain a breadth of written and visual material. Between 2004 and 2007, three Story Sites have been installed. They are:

LIVING TOGETHER - Galamah
RIVER CROSSINGS - Mirring
GATHERING PLACE - Burbang Mah

Each Story Sites is comprised of several 3.6 x 1.2 metre interpretive panels with seating for easy reading and resting…
